[ignore] temporary notes - compensation convo 26 april 2022

  • Compensation can be a sensitive subject

  • A&D not final but can using current aim and domains statement be instructive as a reference point

  • This convo is specific to govnaut

  • The goals is to get things to a point where they are good enough for now and safe enough to try

  • Facilitation Framework & Questions for X1 Treasury Management OIP

  • Q2 seems to take priority for us now

  • Talking Q2, with Q3 in mind

  1. Q2: What kinds of individual and group behavior do we want to incentivize?
    • collaboration, individual, collectivism, relationship-building, community building, loyalty, contributions to discussions/discord/discourse, etc
  • Not incentivizing minimal viable behavior, i.e., not people gaming the system to get more points to be compensated

  • Work done by govnaut should add value to ON as a whole

    • We should attract quality of people to be successful in domains to make that happen
    • Those people should feel rewarded and recognized
    • Relationship building seems important to make this happen
  • At the core of governance (and metagovernance) are relationships

  • Secondary community building important too

  • Writing gov proposals

  • Collaborating, building, relationships are bubble up

    • There is a hint at the idea of reward for output
  • Two kinds of gov proposals:

      1. internal proposals to improve ON and ON ability to be effective
      1. external proposals to add value to other protocols
  • The incentive conversation pushes people to value alignment

    • encourages contribs to align and have a means to continue the work
    • not just for the mission, but also to give something tangible to have them stick around
  • The word reward sounds like an uncertain bonus, whereas compensation sounds like an exchange

  • Let’s hold the tension of the actual wording for now

    • see if it comes up again as we proceed
    • not necessary to answer this question for what we’re working on now
  • To summarize Q1:

    • Research and resulting proposals are actions that help us make progress
    • Actions that build internal and external community should be incentivized
    • So should people be rewarded for actions or outcomes?
      • Quality of work that is inline with the expectations should be compensated
  • If action taken that is not asked for, it should not be rewarded the same as things that were asked for

  • If people do work, and the organizational environment changes, this work may no longer be relevant; what incentive agreements apply to them?

    • When future rewards/ compensation is unclear, it may lead to an environment of people demanding funds upfront.
    • The worst thing is if agreements are made and then broken as this creates trust issues.

  • Q3
  1. Who is this being designed for?
    • people doing this as a hobby, side-hustle, or intention for more?
    • people with significant financial resources, anyone, or some other group?
  • Who is the community in gov-naut?

  • gradient of contributors from fulltime to sporadic

  • important to have flexible roles

  • some people are looking to settle

    • we need paths for people to be mobile in this pod
  • What’s GEFNSETT for X1?

    • Side hustle / hobby / people banking on this paying off in the future
    • Dimension of skill set
    • Defining skill sets is not required for today’s conversation

  • Tactical

  • Are these tactical point necessary for today?

  • Should compensation be pod role based?

  • What’s creating the value that moves us towards the strategic goal?

    • Role-based = preset workload
  • Note to role based comp is that workload can be fine tuned

    • Easier to assign workload to a role
  • Risk of complete atomization of tasks if it’s more reward-centric compensation

  • Listing things that the role is responsible for and how they are graded

  • No objections to compensation in gov-naut being role-based but with room for task based rewards

    • Actual incentives should be adjusted on an ongoing basis and reflect reality of contribution as it unfolds
  • Part of this convo is challenging because there is no community token

    • Outside of today’s scope
